What/Where

Casa Tomada at Casa de las Américas
Habana, Cuba

Inspired by "African Adventure", a piece by the South African artist Jane Alexander, "11:11" presents us with a liminal space—one inhabited by the anguish, frustration, and powerlessness generated by the reality of our own context. It is a place where everything remains perpetually the same; where there is a pervasive sense that nothing ever truly happens; where six beings coexist without ever fully interacting; and where forces beyond their control compel them to remain and keep moving forward, without their knowing exactly why or how... a space where one is left to determine whether these beings are human or animal—prey or hunter, victim or perpetrator. It is a space where every day is the same day, every hour the same hour—an endless, repeating cycle.

Here, beginning and end merge to give way to monotony, to passivity, and to the resignation of continuing to play the game of the vanquished.

Does any hope remain? As Galeano once said: “In the history of humanity, every act of destruction finds its answer—sooner or later—in an act of creation.”
